What Could You Put Under a Stone Pergola?

Water would be another lovely possibility. Imagine a shallow lily pond beneath the pergola, perhaps with a classical stone urn or other ornamental feature rising from the centre. Water could gently trickle or cascade from the urn into the pond below, while water lilies and other aquatic plants soften the edges. The sound of gently moving water would make the space feel wonderfully peaceful, and the columns and rafters would frame the whole feature beautifully.

Alternatively, the pergola could shelter a small fountain, ornamental rill or other water feature. A structure like this could create a real sense of surprise in the garden, particularly if it is positioned at the end of a path or used to frame a view.

A stone pergola could also be used to frame a beautiful view. This is something that works particularly well in a more classical or formal garden, where structures were often positioned to focus the eye towards something special. Looking through the columns, you might see a fountain, statue, urn, pond or a particularly beautiful part of the garden and countryside beyond. A path leading towards the pergola could make this effect even more dramatic.

The pergola itself can therefore become part of the view. The columns act almost like a series of picture frames, encouraging the eye to look through them. This could be a long view across a lawn, a distant sculpture, an ornate gate, or simply a beautiful planting combination.

Of course, the space could also be used for the most fabulous outdoor dining area or a comfortable garden retreat, with sofas, chairs and a table beneath the rafters.

The important thing is that a pergola with substantial stone columns can be far more than a place to sit. It can provide a beautiful setting for a fountain, pond, sculpture, urn or other special feature that deserves to become a focal point in its own right.
