Clear Pond Water
Easy Low-Maintenance Tips 

We sit here for hours under our cosy patio pergola surrounded by amazing plants and wildlife - the bees buzzing lazily balanced on the blue geranium and nepeta, the birds chattering softly taking turns to bathe in the pools, splashing and drinking from the clear water. It is truly a magical place to be - a little slice of heaven I just had to share with you!

The green clarity of the water shines out in the sunshine, and sinking into the deep cushions of our  comfortable, low bench seats, I can see to the bottom of the pond and the waterfall pools too. The water radiates intense light.

It wasn't always that way!

When I first built the pond about 10 years ago, it was a bit murky, to say the least, after all the building work and from standing in the pond and the waterfall pools to place the surrounding stones in the most beautiful and natural way.

I didn't have any pond plant oxygenators at the time, so I added just a little bit of moss from our limestone garden wall. It was a long shot!

But the next morning was a revelation. The water was crystal clear and we could see right to the bottom! I knew I had stumbled on an amazingly easy and quick way to clear pond water!

Plant Oxygenators for Clear Pond Water

Adding oxygenators to a newly built pond feature is the usual way to go, but the water and the ecosystems can take quite a while to settle down. The water has to achieve a delicate balance before clearing.  

But with just that little bit of moss, the effect was immediate. I wasn't quite sure why this worked so quickly, but sometimes it's not for us to question why; the fact that it works so brilliantly is the important thing!

After seven years, and quite a bit of pond clearance, maintenance and re-arranging, not realising I had taken out the stones with moss cover, over winter and the following spring frustration crept in because the water had turned murky - nothing seemed healthy or clear...

...and then I remembered the moss! I put it on top of one of  the stones inside the pond, just touching the water, not really believing that it was going to work again, but lo and behold, the next morning the pond was beautifully clear. It is extraordinary how well this works!

So, from now on just a little bit of moss stays on one of our stones. You can see it here doing the biz.

Attracting Wildlife

What a bonus this has been! The ecosystem around the pond and waterfall is just unbelievable. Watching it all go on from our patio pergola is such a great way to relax and unwind and, with a morning coffee or evening glass of wine, is pure bliss.

The birds put on a real show. Here they are!

Dragonflies visit to warm themselves on the stones...

...and the frog is very well camouflaged on the top ledge. There are so many hidden in the pockets of stone around both the inside and outside of the pond.

Many different varieties of bees visit the garden, from the tiniest to seriously massive bumble bees. They often drink from the pond, especially when it is really hot.

Butterflies of all colours, shapes and sizes visit the garden, moths, tiny dormice snuggling into the smallest of spaces in the dry stone walls and all manner of insects and creepy crawlies.

What a joy it is!

The flowers are a big attraction for the pollinators, of course, (they hover so close we can see the pollen-laden baskets on their legs). The pergola is covered in wonderful plants and climbers.

Birds fly swiftly by and so close - sparrows, robins, blackbirds, thrushes, believing it to be their territory. 

We are very blessed.

Sludge Removal

Over the years, I've found that even with crystal-clear water, a natural build-up on the bottom is inevitable from fallen leaves and garden debris.

To keep the pond floor tidy without disrupting its delicate balance, I use a natural pond sludge remover. It contains beneficial enzymes that gently break down and 'eat up' organic sludge, working quietly in the background alongside the moss to keep everything fresh and completely safe for wildlife.

For me, anything natural is always a good thing.
