Wooden Pergola Kit
Why Wood?
When considering buying a premanufactured pergola, most people would think of a wooden pergola kit. This is simply because wooden pergolas are the ones we see most often. Wood is a natural material and therefore gentle on the eye, especially in a more traditional garden. It also has a warmth to it and can be beautifully crafted - even if it is by machine!
A natural wood pergola is a wonderful structure in its own right, but even more so when draped with wonderfully colourful and fragrant plants, giving height, structure and interest to the garden.
There are many wooden pergola kits on the market today, in all manner of shapes and styles. The definition of pergolas, arbours, arches and gazebos can be somewhat blurred, so keep this in mind when exploring the possibilities -
Is it a gazebo?---Is it an arbour?---no, it's a pergola, built in an oriental style, with design elements taken from the pagoda!!
Anyway, I'm sure you get my meaning. Don't get too hung up on what the structure actually is. It might be that an arch or arbour of some sort might better suit your requirements. Explore the different styles, keeping in mind the features you would like, and choose accordingly.
Pergola Styles
The building of pergola kits is done by a small number of manufacturing companies, which in turn are sold by many distribution outlets. There are several well established manufacturers but now we see a huge range of products from the traditional pergola through to the very elaborate. Some of them are truly fantastic, especially the asian inspired pergolas, with curved or turreted rafters.
There are a few companies I use when buying pergolas, arches, arbours, gazebos and other garden structures for clients - that is, if I am not making a bespoke one for them or if it will be cheaper to buy than to make it. It is possible to find really wonderful bargains that will make a huge difference to your garden by giving it height and structure
Here are some companies I use, with comments and recommendations based on my experience.
Screwfix
Always great on price and sell some fabulous deck and pergola kits. Their basic pergolas are all that is often needed. Delivery is quick and efficient.
Taylors Garden Buildings
Have some really interesting pergolas and arbours, swinging arbours and seating. While looking, make sure to scroll down the page, as the bigger pictures are at the bottom, giving you a much better idea of what they look like.
Home and Garden Gifts
Excellent prices and a wide range of products. Take a look at the pergolas, arches, arbours, garages (lean-to) and gazebos. They will also make some products to your own specification, which can be very useful if your space is not a standard size!
Garden Chic
They have some really lovely products. Many that I would term a wooden pergola kit are listed under 'Arches'. There are fabulous gazebos, with an unbelievable Rowlinson Oriental Pagoda - you'd need a big garden for that one! Great prices, too.
Greenfingers
Good for seated and swinging arbours. Some of their arches could easily be used as a pergola and they have a very wide range of garden products and outdoor structures that are unusual, such as some of their tree seats and hanging chairs. Free delivery on most outdoor structures.
B & Q
Have a wide range of oriental pergolas and some really good extended pergolas with decking. Substantial discounts on many garden structures.
Argos
Provide a limited range at very affordable prices. They do a pergola/arch with planters, which is a nice touch if the wooden pergola kit is not placed near a planting area. They also do rustic pole syle pergolas and arbours. Some of their products are called arches but could easliy be used as a pergola.
I love using these pergolas in gardens as they really enhance an outdoor space, and there are a huge amount to choose from, whether your garden is modern, traditional or stylised.
